Ode to My Mother Series - Persephone
While out with her mother (Demeter) picking flowers, Persephone was kidnapped by Hades and taken to the underworld across the River Styx. Things were not all bad for Persephone in the underworld; she was free from her mother’s protection and was able to cavort with Orpheus and other talented people/gods. Demeter’s grief at the loss of her daughter caused the world’s trees to lose their leaves, leading to an intervention by Zeus, who brokered a compromise: Persephone would spend half of each year with Hades and the other half above ground with her mother.
This piece is the start of multi-stage series leveraging symbols to take viewers through the journey of generational trauma. The process used to construct this piece was based on previous paintings completed that no longer served their purpose. The sewing and quilting technique were taught to the artist by her mother.
